Italy lies in the temperate zone. But because of the considerable length of the Italian Peninsula, the climate in the north, which is attached top European subcontinent differs much from the climate in the south which is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Though in extreme summer temperature differences are low, but in winters temperature differences are noticeable; it can be -20C in Milan, 80C in Rome while 200C in Palemo.
